We are a multi-skilled team of experts in building design, use and performance

The Team

We have all the necessary expertise in-house to design how a building looks, works and performs.

Cityzen’s team is multi-skilled in architectural design, energy and building services engineering (power, lighting, alarms, plumbing, drainage, utilities, renewables etc.) for commercial projects.

Whether it’s transforming listed properties, creating beautiful homes or developing contemporary modular spaces, Cityzen offers you a combination of creativity and technical know-how, resulting in homes, offices and leisure spaces that are attractive, functional, comfortable and energy efficient.

Coordination and collaboration are key to successful projects. We are used to working with multiple stakeholders. Our chartered architectural technologists, and mechanical and electrical engineers work alongside a trusted network of other professionals (structural engineers, planning consultants, building control inspectors, interior designers, quantity surveyors, land/building surveyors, ecology consultants and energy assessors).

Code of Conduct

We’ve got your back

Our team can guide you through any or every part of the process, from the early stages of design through to support during the construction phase.

We’re compliance experts

Our packages work to minimise compromise between building regulations, detailing and M&E requirements.

Designs that are actually built

We’re known for our attention to detail. There are many elements that won’t even be visible when your project is finished, yet are critical to its success.

We aren’t fazed

Every project encounters obstacles. As a multi-disciplinary practice we understand how buildings work inside and out, so problem solving is one of our real strengths.

We engage with clients

Sustainability is important to us. Sustainable design doesn’t mean a building can’t look good, or that the wow factor has to be sacrificed. Far from it!

We’re CIAT registered practice

You can have confidence in our team as we have to adhere to the CIAT code of conduct and are assessed on their professional criteria.

A Different Mindset

Cityzen is an award-winning, forward-thinking, ethical design practice committed to low carbon initiatives. Back in the late 90s, when John was a building services design engineer, he noticed the industry was shifting towards building performance and that this was having an impact on the design process. Wanting to deliver coordinated design solutions, John retrained in Architectural Technology in the early 2000’s.

Cityzen was then set up in 2010 to offer an alternative to the common practice of considering energy and running costs after an architect has finalised the aesthetic design. The practice was co-founded by John Smith MCIAT, a chartered architectural technologist and building services engineer, and Charlotte Smith, (previously) a BREEAM assessor and sustainability advisor.

John and Charlotte share a passion for achieving excellence in building performance and, with this in mind, Cityzen works to bridge the gap between great architecture and great building efficiency. Now, John and Charlotte have built up a team of fellow experts who share their passion and attention to detail. Cityzen now works with clients ranging from world-leading architects to local authorities, helping to improve architectural efficiency in every single project they work on
